My Internet is not working

Question

I am having trouble with my 48 internet... have applied the correct internet settings on my phone but I am still getting no data even tho I have 'the don' membership...how do i get it working?

Answer

Try the online Tweakker configurator first - if that works then that's great - you're done!

http://48months.tweakker.com/choose

If your specific phone model is not listed then try choosing one that is "similar" as that may also work.

If, as happens to many people including me, it does not work (e.g. never sends any configuration settings to your phone) then you will need to configure the settings manually so read on...

Make sure that your membership is active and you actually do have a data allowance through your membership or a data add-on.

Dial *100*8# to check your data allowance balance.

Handy short-codes

Make sure that your settings match those below.

APN: 48months.liffeytelecom.com
MMSC: http://mmc1/servlets/mms
MMS Proxy: 10.1.11.19
MMS Port: 8080
MCC: 272
MNC: 11
APN Type: default,mms,supl

It that APN Type doesn't work then try:

APN Type: *

Leave all other fields blank/not set (including Authentication type).

Make sure that data roaming is enabled.

Make sure that data is enabled.

If you configure these settings and they still don't work then please DOUBLE CHECK that you did not make any mistakes - e.g. some people have entered 48.months.liffeytelecom.com instead of 48months.liffeytelecom.com etc. The settings must be entered EXACTLY as specified above.

If you already have internet/APN settings but they are different to those above then reconfigure your settings so they match those above or delete any existing APNs and start again and add the 48 one anew.

If internet/data still does not work after configuring the settings correctly then try powering off and on again and maybe manually scanning for networks and connecting to 48.

If internet access still doesn't work then contact 48 support for assistance:

http://www.48months.ie/help#ask-a-48-agent

Hope this helps.

How do I add/configure an APN on my phone?

You need to check the documentation and user interface for your phone for specific instructions.

However on most Android phones the process is similar although there may be slight differences how to navigate the menu options to get to the right place and slight differences in the options that can be configured.

See here for an example of a general guide for Android phones:

http://www.androidcentral.com/what-apn-and-how-do-i-change-it

Similarly for iOS the specific menus/options may differ depending on the phone and version of iOS. But this is what Apple have to say about it:

https://support.apple.com/en-ie/HT201699

And here is another third party guide (which may or may not be for a specific version of iOS):

http://www.howtoisolve.com/how-to-add-apn-setting-in-iphone-cellular-data-network/

If necessary Google for specific instructions for your phone.

A note about personal hotspot setup on iPhones

Once you have your internet APN set up and data/internet access working you can also use this connection as part of a personal hotspot (this will probably use up your data allowance more quickly than "normal" internet access so keep an eye on your quota and that you don't breach the fair usage limits).

This is generally straightforward on Android (and Windows?) but Apple sometimes make it more difficult on some iPhones/iOS versions for some reason...

Some people find that their iPhone/iOS iOS 8?) does not show the personal hotspot option in which case the following workaround may be required:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PF8dC-Ikc0

But note:

At around 1 minute into that video he has Personal Hotspot > APN = gadget. Enter 48months.liffeytelecom.com instead.

At around 2 minutes into that video he has Mobile Data > APN = internet and also Personal Hotspot > APN = internet. Enter 48months.liffeytelecom.com instead.

iOS 7: Internet and MMS set-up

If you just upgraded to iOS7 chances are your internet or MMS suddenly stopped working. Not to worry, we've got you sorted. Read on below to find out how to fix things.

Click on one of the headings below to jump to the information you need:

While you're installing iOS 7

How to change your Internet settings (APN)

Internet and MMS settings for iOS7

After the upgrade

While you're installing iOS 7

Back to top

If you are planning to upgrade your iDevice to iOS7, you can prevent your internet settings from being reset.

While your phone is updating, you will be asked if you want to udpate your carrier settings. If you decline, the upgrade will go on, and your current Internet and MMS settings will be kept. That's the easiest option.

If you chose to update your carrier settings during the upgrade, the 48 settings will have been removed, and you will need to set them up again manually. We'll tell you how to do it in the next section.

How to change your Internet settings (APN)

Back to top

When you are upgrading from one major version of iOS to another, your Internet and MMS settings may be reset, so you need to set them up again.

When trying to access an Internet page, if you see a message reading "Could not activate mobile data network: You are not subsribed to a mobile data service", it means you need to re-enter your Internet settings.

How to enter new Internet settings

Go to Settings

Go to Mobile

Go to Mobile Data

Under Mobile Data Network, enter the Internet settings available in the next section

Under MMS, enter the MMS settings available in the next section

Switch 3G off and on

A little note about picture messaging

Just a quick word about how picture messaging works with your 48 SIM.

You need a few things to send or receive picture messages.

1) Internet on your phone. As picture/MMS messages are sent and received via the internet you will need the internet add on for it to work.

2) The correct settings. All the settings you need are here.

3) If you are sending pictures you will need some credit as they are not free. Each picture message you send will cost €0.30. You can see a breakdown of additional costs here.

If after check all of this and are still having problems with sending or receiving pictures then it's time to ask an agent.

How do I top up? Overview of the top-up payment options

There are a few different options for topping up with 48:

By credit or debit card

By voucher

By Text

Purchase via Giftshop

Credit or debit card

Use your debit or credit card and go to 48 top-up page.

These credit or debit card will be accepted:

Visa Credit

Visa Debit

Mastercard

Laser

We don't accept American Express or Diners Club - if you have one of these cards, you'll need to purchase a top-up voucher - see details below.

Top up online:

Log in to top-up your account, if you've pre-registered your card details here it saves you fumbling through your wallet to find the details again.

If you're not logged in, or someone else wants to top-up your mobile, simply go to the gift shop click here. You'll be asked to enter the 48 mobile number, choose either top-up, buy a membership or buy an add-on and then it'll take you through to a page to enter the card details.

If you login you will be asked if you want to use your pre-registered card. You will then be asked to choose top up or add-on and further card security information.

<Back to top>

Top-up Voucher

You can buy a top-up voucher in thousands of shops across Ireland associated with Payzone and also Omnivend vending machines.

However, as we expected some of the larger shops don’t have it set up yet on their own till systems.

Most of such shops also have a stand-alone Payzone terminal which does have 48 top-up. So in this case the shop assistant will need to use the Payzone terminal. The other problem is that staff hasn’t heard of us.

If it’s a definitely a Payzone outlet but the shop says they don’t sell 48 top-up, ask the staff member to use the pink Payzone terminal and check under mobile top-up .

How to apply a top-up voucher

From your 48 mobile: Call the free 48 top-up number 1740 from your 48 phone and follow the voice prompts along the way.

Via USSD: This can be done by simply keying *101* + voucher number # on your phone.

Online: Go to the top-up screen and enter the 12-digit top-up code

<Back to top>

By Text

You can now apply your bundles, whether it be membership, data or roaming via text message.

It's simple and you can check see how to do it here.

Top up via the gift shop

Within the gift shop you can top up another 48 members account. This will be useful if you need to add credit to a son or daughter’s or your tight-ass boyfriend’s account using your card.

Select the "gift shop" link. You can then select the gift type (either top up amount or add-on). Enter the phone number you want to receive the gift followed by the payment details.

Once the gift purchase has been confirmed the recipient will receive a text to let them know.

Problems sending a text

So... you're having some bother sending a text message? But can receive them without a bother? Then something just ain't right!

First thing would be, have you bought your membership? You've topped up you're saying? That's not always enough. You'll need to convert that to membership so have a look here for more info on that.

So if you've already bought your membership then it has to be something else.

Next thing to do would be to try and check your message centre number - it should be +353894300000 for 48. (And it's really important that it starts +353 and not 00353)

Now where do you check it you might be asking? It's different for every handset. Normally, it's in the Message menu and you'll be looking for "Message Centre Number" - sometimes shortened to SMSC! If you're really stuck Google it!

And if your message centre number is right, you'll need to get in touch with us care crew agents here.

How to send 'Call Me' messages

What is ‘Call Me’?

‘Call Me’ lets you send a free text to a friend asking them to call you back.

How does it work?

Just text your friend's number to 50148.

For example, if your friend’s number is 0899999999, just text 0899999999 to 50148.
Your friend will then receive a “hey, call me” message from your phone.

How do they know if is from me?

The text will appear from your mobile number, not 50148, so they’ll know if is from you.

Can I send it to any number?

You can send it to any Irish mobile number.
Just make sure you use one of the correct formats below:

08xxxxxxxx

+3538xxxxxxxx

003538xxxxxxxx

3538xxxxxxxx

Is there a maximum number of call me texts a 48 customer can send?

Yes, 100 a month.

How to unlock your phone

If you’ve having trouble with your SIM being recognised, it might be that your phone is locked to your old network. You will need to free your phone and get it unlocked so you can join 48. If you’re not techie this might sound like a total head wreck, but it needn’t be!

Check out our Unlock Guide where we have free, impartial advice to help you unlock that phone.

You can also tell us about your unlocking experience by leaving a review in the guide to help other members identify the best unlocking services for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want to find out more about unlocking and how the different options work? Check out our FAQs below to find the right option for you and the things to watch out for.

If you've already unlocked your phone, don't forget to pop a review in our unlocking guide for the service you used.

What is mobile phone unlocking?

<LI-SPOILER>

Unlocking a mobile phone is simply removing its SIM card restrictions, allowing the phone to use virtually any SIM card from any network in Ireland or anywhere in the world.

When you buy your phone, in most cases, it will be locked to that mobile network. This means you can only use it with a SIM card from that mobile operator.

If you decide to switch to another mobile network and want to keep your handset you will need to unlock your handset so it works with the SIM card for your new mobile provider.

There are different ways that you can get your handset unlocked. You can ask the mobile network provider you bought the phone from or, if you are out of contract or were given your phone by someone else, you can use a number of unlocking service providers.

</LI-SPOILER>

Is my mobile phone locked?

<LI-SPOILER>

A phone is network locked if it doesn't accept SIM cards from every mobile company.

There's a variety of error messages you get when inserting an incompatible SIM such as "incompatible SIM", "enter network unlock code" or "enter subsidy PIN".

If you see one of these messages when you put your 48 SIM into your phone then your phone is locked.

Before switching your number to 48 it is important to find out if your handset is locked or not. If you have an active 48 SIM pop it in your phone and check if the 48 network symbol appears. If not, or if you get one of the messages above, your phone is still locked.

If you don’t have an active 48 SIM contact the mobile operator and should be able to tell you if the handset is still locked.

</LI-SPOILER>

What information do I need to get my phone unlocked?

<LI-SPOILER>

You will generally need four basic pieces of information to unlock your handset: the make, the model, the IMEI and the network it is locked to.

You can usually find your phone make and model on the box it came in, the instruction manual, or on the back of the phone, sometimes behind (or even on) the battery.

There are too many models and variations to give a general rule. If you can’t find the model there are sites such as www.gsmarena.com list most models of phones along with handy pictures to help you identify yours.

Your IMEI is a 15 digit number which is a unique device identifier. In order to find your IMEI, just type *#06# into your keypad when the phone is switched on. As simple as that. You can often also find it on the box your phone came in, but this varies from brand to brand.

</LI-SPOILER>

How much does it cost to get my phone unlocked?

<LI-SPOILER>

Unlocking your phone can cost anything from €0 to almost a hundred euros. Of course, how much you pay depends on a number of factors such as what your phone is, what network it is locked to, what method you use, and how quickly you need your phone unlocked.

As a rule of thumb, unlocking your phone from a network operator won’t cost you. However, if you are on pre pay they will require that you have topped up by a certain amount before they will give you the unlock code. If you are bill pay, and still in your contract term, they will require that you pay the remainder of your contract before they will give you an unlock code.

The cost when using an unlocking site or in a shop will vary. For example, it can cost €20 to unlock a Samsung Galaxy Ace online but you will usually get the code in a matter of hours. It can cost anything from €15 to €70 to unlock an iPhone.

Online sites should give you a quote before you order your unlock code. Shop around but be aware that if the price sounds too good to be true it could be a scam.

</LI-SPOILER>

Can mobile phones be unlocked?

<LI-SPOILER>

The majority of phones can be unlocked and although there are a few exceptions, there are too many to mention individually. Typical examples include operator-exclusive phone models.

A good way to figure out whether your phone can be unlocked is by phoning your operator. In some cases, your operator won't be able to unlock your mobile, yet a professional high street unlocker will. Pop down the road and talk to your local unlocking shop for a near-definitive answer.

</LI-SPOILER>

Can I unlock an iPhone?

<LI-SPOILER>

Since Apple released iOS7 Apple have added more security to iPhones.

When unlocking an iPhone you have to activate it using iTunes after it has been unlocked.

iPhones with new iOS7 can only be fully activated after unlock if the user knows the iCloud Account Details of the iPhone, or if the iPhone has not been registered to iCloud yet.

iF your iPhone is running iOS7 and is tied to an iCloud account, you must know the icloud user details of the iPhone

You should perform the following checks before unlocking your iPhone:

Is the iphone you are unlocking using iOS7

Is the iphone you are unlocking using iCloud?

If yes, does the user know their iCloud email address and password?

Without these details you would not be able to activate the iPhone, even after the unlock is completed.

</LI-SPOILER>

Unlocking through your mobile operator

<LI-SPOILER>

On the face of it, this is the most "legit" option. Who better to unlock your phone than the people who got it locked in the first place?

Some mobile phone companies are better than others in this respect. Their terms also depend on whether you're a pre-pay or post-pay customer and how long you have been with them.

The method for requesting your unlock and the length of time it take can vary by operator.

For more detail on each how to request an unlock code from your mobile operator and their requirements simply select your mobile operator in the list above this FAQ.

Some customers have reported not being able to unlock phones with their operators if they didn't buy the phone themselves (for example, if they bought the phones on ebay). If this is the case, you might need to get in touch with the previous owner to get authorisation, or look into one of the other methods.

</LI-SPOILER>

Unlocking using online websites

<LI-SPOILER>

If you are out of contract or been given your phone by someone else, an increasingly popular option is to buy a code online. There are a number of companies out there that provide this service. Although their prices are not generally cheaper than the high street, they offer an alternative that doesn't involve handing your phone over for days on end.

Some of the best companies offer reasonable customer service and will give you full instructions on how to perform the procedure. However, prices are variable.

How do these companies get their codes? Much in the same way that operators get theirs. They are sourced indirectly from mobile phone companies and handset manufacturers.

While many of these companies are reputable, be careful as there have been reports of scams and fraudsters so do be careful. As a general rule, if you shop around and you get a price that's too good to be true, it generally is.

In this category are also included companies that advertise their services online and then ask you to call a premium-rate number to get your code. Our advice is to stay clear of these as they only stock a limited number of codes which are freely available elsewhere, meaning that the majority of customers are left poorer but none the wiser.

</LI-SPOILER>

Unlocking in high street unlocking shops

<LI-SPOILER>

You may have seen phone-repair outlets, computer shops and even key-cutting businesses that offer this service, typically marked by a neon display and a range of phone accessories.

Let's face it: many of them look rather shady. The perceived illegality of unlocking no doubt partly derives from the jungle of cables and screwdrivers that one is confronted with when dealing with these vendors.

Professional unlockers use a combination of methods to unlock phones, using cables, clips, codes and even online forums to help them find the right solution for your handset.

Costs vary and begin from as little as €10, though are reported to go over €70 for some new handsets such as iPhone 5s.

You can expect to have to wait between 15 minutes and one week to get your phone back from high street unlockers.

While this solution involves leaving the house and handing your treasured phone over to a stranger, it remains a popular option due to the convenience of not having to worry yourself with complicated instructions and technically challenging procedures. Prices also tend to be reasonable.

Make sure you ask what method they use as this could affect your warranty. Some use a SIM card that they put in your phone that reads the phones information and updates it. This method will definitely void your warranty.

</LI-SPOILER>

Will unlocking affect my warranty?

<LI-SPOILER>

Yes. Almost certainly.

Mobile operators have been known to refuse to fix phones that have been unlocked (though this is not always the case).

If this happens there are other options to get your phone repaired. Many computer repair shops also repair mobile phones. You can ask other 48 members if they have used any that they can recommend.

</LI-SPOILER>

Is mobile unlocking safe?

<LI-SPOILER>

Phones are designed with unlocking in mind. Having said this, not all methods used to unlock handsets achieve this in the way the manufacturers intended.

As a rule of thumb, if you're typing in a series of codes to unlock your phone this is likely to be a safe method.

As soon as you connect your device to a machine or software built by a third party you run the risk of changing settings deep within the phone which may affect its usability.

Finally, using a special SIM to unlock your phone may involve physical damage to your SIM and your phone, rendering them unusable or in urgent need of repair/replacement. While unlocking is not illegal, some methods may be dangerous.

</LI-SPOILER>

Is mobile phone unlocking legal/illegal?

<LI-SPOILER>

Locked phones mean customers have less choice. In the Ireland, ComReg (the telecoms regulator) allows companies to lock mobiles because they often come subsidised at point of sale.

This means that mobile operators absorb part of the cost of the mobile, so they expect you to stay with them until they make back this cost (and beyond, as many of you have discovered!)

</LI-SPOILER>

Have you used any of these unlocking methods yourself? If so, let the other members know how it went and what you thought of the services. You can review some of the online services in our unlocking guide here.

1. Did you get the phone unlocked?

Yes - Good. Next question.

No – Time to sort that out. Check our unlocking guide.

2. Have you registered your SIM yet?

First you've got to know what you can buy so here's an overview of the different memberships available:

The Don: Pay €20 and get 1,000 mobile minutes, unlimited texts to all networks, 8GB of data and 60 landline minutes.

The Guido: Pay €10 and get 300 mobile minutes, unlimited texts to all networks, 1GB of data and 60 landline minutes.

With all these plans, you also get unlimited messaging on Whatsapp

What's the Whatsapp deal about?

WhatsApp messaging is only available if you have data included (i.e. in your membership plan or if you buy a data add on). You will not be charged for data when you use the WhatsApp messaging service for messages via the app but if you use the voice features on WhatsApp you will incur data charges.

What about the old membership deals?

If you've joined us before March, 5th 2013 you can still buy them.

Ok, I know which membership I want, what now?

If you haven't done so already you will need to buy top up credit. There are many different ways how to top up, check them out here.

I've got enough top up credit, how do I buy my membership with that?

1. Log into your account via My 48 at the top of this page.
