Just home so I'm only posting this now. I haven't had a data connection all day. I've been across the country and its the same everywhere. My sister who is also with you is in the same boat. Any suggestions appreciated.

Yes, we both have gone through the switching on and off steps but the problem still persists.
It's a bit of a conincidence that we both experienced the same problem at the same time. Other friends have also the same problem so I am assuming it's a problem at 48 Months end.

Not Samsung Galaxy phones by any chance?
Samsung Galaxy phones seem to have this unfortunate habit of spontaneously losing some or all of the required data settings for some reason.
You need to configure your internet/APN settings first if you haven't done that already:
