I'm travelling to Germany on Thursday, I was there last month and was unable to make or receive calls despite topping up with EU credit. Can you tell me how to manipulate my phone ( an iphone 5) to work in Germany.

You need to read this:

You may need to try this several times before it works.

iPhones are a pain when roaming unfortunately...

The iPhone fix refuses to work for me - on clicking the "When Abroad" option my reception just refreshes and no new options become available, it reverts back to the "When Abroad" menu. Are there any alternatives?

Glad you got it sorted.
It can take several/many attempts.
Blame Apple for the stupid way that they do things with iPhones. 😞
