July 2013 - Cheaper roaming rates

[ Edited ]

Roaming rates are coming down when you use your phone in another EU country - sweet

The price of making a call on 48 when you’re abroad in the EU has come down from 35c per minute to 29c per minute. The cost of receiving a call has come down from 9c a minute to 8c a minute. And the cost of sending a text has come down from 10c to 9c per text.

We’re offering even better value when you’re away in the EU with our EU Roaming Add-ons:

  • Our EU Roaming Voice Add-on costs €3.50 for 15 minutes of outgoing calls and includes free incoming calls. This brings the per minute cost of an outgoing call down to just over 23c per minute AND you get to receive calls for free too.
  • Our EU Roaming Text Add-on costs €2.00 for 25 texts. That works out at 8c a text, cheaper again than paying for it from your additional credit.

Great news for you lot travelling around Europe this summer. Just remember to top-up and add some credit to your account before you go and text ‘15mins’ or ‘25texts’ to 1745 to buy these great add-ons.

And if you're lucky enough to travel further than EU countries then go here to check the rates for international calls worldwide.

If you're unsure about what to do before you board your flight, read our guide about going abroad with 48.

Any idea if/when Croatia will be added to the list of EU countries covered by the EU roaming add-ons?

http://community.48months.ie/t5/Need-Help/Croatia-joins-the-EU-on-July-1st-Does-that-mean-I-will-be-...

According to the pricing info Croatia is still listed as non EU/rest of Europe:

Thanks.

Re: Cheaper roaming rates

Hey dalyer,

we've added Croatia to the list of EU countries now, so it's definitely included in the EU roaming pricing.

Cheers.

Re: Cheaper roaming rates

I think that you need a membership for any services to work - including incoming calls while roaming. But you might want to clarify this with 48 support:

http://help.48months.ie/requests/new

Similarly I don't think that you can use a mobile internet add-on (or allowance on a membership) when you don't have a membership in place.

Note that 48 does not support roaming data access. You'll have to use wifi abroad.

Note also that you don't require an EU roaming calls add-on to receive calls but it's cheaper (free versus 8c/min).

Hope this helps.

The roaming add-on is for calling Irish numbers FROM abroad while travelling in the EU.

Not for calling TO EU (UK) numbers from Ireland.

http://48months.ie/boiler-plate/add-on-rules

You may use your Roaming add-ons for making calls to or sending texts to the Republic of Ireland while in EU Countries only. For details on eligible EU countries click here. You may not use your EU add-ons for calls or texts to international numbers, premium rate numbers, non-geographic numbers or Directory Enquiries.

To make international calls on the 48 network you need cash in your credit balance.

Calls to EU numbers cost 50c per minute and are charged from your credit balance.

http://www.48months.ie/pricing

Skype or some similar alternative might be cheaper... (I sometimes use 13434.ie).

In case it is relevant Northern Ireland landline numbers can be called using your membership/add-on landline minutes if you use the 048 prefix:

http://www.askcomreg.ie/tell_us/calling_northern_ireland___use_the_048_code_to_call_fixed_line_numbe...

Hope this helps.

Yes Poland is included:

http://www.48months.ie/pricing

"We have 2 add-ons that offer great value when roaming in the EU

...

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Rep, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, French Antilles (incl Guadeloupe), French Guiana, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Martinique, Mayotte & Reunion, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal (incl. Azores and Madeira), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (incl Canary Islands), Sweden, or the UK (incl Northern Ireland, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man) ..."

http://www.48months.ie/boiler-plate/add-on-rules

"You may use your Roaming add-ons for making calls to or sending texts to the Republic of Ireland while in EU Countries only. For details on eligible EU countries click here. You may not use your EU add-ons for calls or texts to international numbers, premium rate numbers, non-geographic numbers or Directory Enquiries."

48 does not support internet/data roaming while abroad:

http://www.48months.ie/pricing

"Data roaming can be expensive, so we don't support it right now. We recommend you go find a local WiFi hotspot!"

Hope this helps.
