Does sending an iMessage to a US iPhone use data? Or would it cost 25 cents?

I'm a US study abroad student looking to contact back home through iMessage.

As far as I know iMessages get sent over the data connection (wifi or carrier data) rather than as regular SMS messages (which on 48 would be charged at 25c per international text).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMessage#Features

iMessage allows users to send texts, documents, photos, videos, contact information, and group messages over Wi-Fi2G3G or LTE to other iOS or OS X users, thus providing an alternative to standard SMS/MMS messaging for most users with devices running iOS 5 or later.

Why not try it and see what happens? Worst that happens is that you're 25c down?

Hope this helps
