You shouldn't have to for calls and texts.
If data/MMS don't work straight off then check your internet/APN settings and if the APN field has changed from 48months.liffeytelecom.com then edit it to set it back to that value, switch airplane mode on and off and then check that it now works.
For some reason many people have had this problem with data while roaming in the EU on a Guido membership.
